Tanja Buhler - Landscape Designer
Tanja is a landscape designer with over 25+ years of experience spanning both design and build, seamlessly incorporating natural stone, distinctive paving styles, and a deeply collaborative approach to bring each client’s vision to life. Her work blends technical expertise with intuition, thoughtfully responding to environmental constraints while transforming them into defining features of a newly realized space.
Guided by a form-and-function philosophy, Tanja designs landscapes that are as practical as they are expressive. Her extensive plant knowledge plays a central role in her work, with a strong emphasis on native plantings that foster sustainable, resilient environments. No stone is left unturned—quite literally—as she carefully considers texture, placement, and the interplay of light, often incorporating fire and water elements to create immersive landscapes that engage all the senses: sight, sound, scent, and touch.
Tanja is known for sourcing distinctive materials and one-of-a-kind pieces, sometimes uncovering turn-of-the-century elements that become focal points and conversation pieces within her designs. These thoughtfully curated details add depth, history, and character to every project.
Tanja is of German descent with deep roots planted in Chicago, Tanja draws inspiration from both her European sensibilities and her urban surroundings. She is a classically trained pianist, a local Chicago all-vinyl DJ, and has a background in perfuming—creative influences that inform her nuanced understanding of rhythm, atmosphere, and sensory balance. Outside of design, she enjoys cooking, gardening, and sailing. Tanja lives on Chicago’s North Side with her husband and creative partner, and their beloved companion, Santa.
